Workcover Physiotherapy Sunshine
Hurt at work? Start with what happened and what you can safely do.
Before we talk about cost or forms, we ask what happened and what you’re able to do at work right now. Your answers shape your assessment, your work restrictions and your return to work.
Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation for Workcover
If you’ve hurt yourself at work, your first questions are rarely about paperwork. What have I done to my back or shoulder? Can I keep working? What will my employer expect from me on Monday?
At Your Story Physiotherapy, we start there. Your answers shape everything else: what we assess, which duties are safe for you, and what your employer and insurer need to hear from a clinician.
We assess your injury, turn it into practical work restrictions, and give you independent guidance on a safe return to work. It’s more than a form.

What your assessment gives you
Your first appointment is a proper physiotherapy assessment, not a form-filling exercise. Your physio will:
- Work out what is actually injured, by testing how the area moves, loads and responds.
- Turn that into practical work restrictions: what you can do, what to avoid and for how long, such as no lifting over 5kg, no overhead work or shorter shifts.
- Give you independent guidance on a safe return to work, based on your injury and your job.
- Explain your next steps in plain English, so you know what to expect from your treatment, your employer and your claim.
Suitable duties and hours: what's reasonable, and for how long
“Suitable duties” means work that matches what you can safely do while you recover. That might be lighter tasks, fewer hours, or a mix of both. It shouldn’t be guesswork, and it shouldn’t ask more of your body than your injury allows.
Your physio can set out in practical terms which tasks you can do now, which to avoid or change, how many hours or shifts are reasonable, and when your restrictions will be reviewed.
If the duties your employer offers don’t seem to fit your restrictions, talk to your physio before you agree to them. We can compare the duties with your capacity and, where it helps, speak with your employer or visit your workplace.

How Certificates of Capacity work
A Certificate of Capacity records your diagnosis, what you can do at work and when you’ll be reviewed. Your employer and the insurer rely on it.
In Victoria, your first Certificate of Capacity must be issued by a doctor, usually your GP. After that, your physiotherapist can issue your ongoing certificates.
- Already have your first certificate from a doctor? We can take over your ongoing certificates and manage your treatment and return to work from here.
- Haven’t seen a doctor about your injury yet? Book a GP visit for your first certificate. You can book your physio assessment straight away, so your treatment and work planning don’t have to wait.
Certificates are time-limited. A first certificate lasts up to 14 days, and later ones up to 28 days unless the insurer’s agent allows longer, so regular reviews are part of the process.
If your employer suggests sorting it out privately
Some workers are asked to handle an injury privately, early on. It’s understandable to want the simplest option, but at the start it’s often unclear how serious an injury is or how long it will affect your work.
A proper assessment gives you a clearer picture of your injury and likely recovery before you decide anything. You’re also welcome to get independent advice, for example from a lawyer or your union, before agreeing to anything. We’re a physiotherapy clinic, so we can’t advise on legal matters, but we can tell you what your injury is and what it may mean for your work.
WorkCover Physiotherapy Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral from my Doctor to get treatment covered under WorkCover?
You do not need a referral from your doctor to access physiotherapy if you have an approved WorkCover claim. However, you must have a valid claim number and insurer approval before treatment can be billed.
Can you bill WorkCover directly?
It will depend on whether your claim has been approved. Clients are required to pay the full amount on the day of their treatment until the claim has been accepted by the relevant insurer. Keep your invoices and give them to your case manager. Once approvals are in place, we send invoices directly to WorkCover.
If you have lodged your claim but are still waiting for approval, your employer may agree to pay for physiotherapy treatment while you wait for your claim to be assessed.
If your claim has been approved, please bring your Claim Approval letter with you – this will include your claim number and date of injury.
Can you issue a WorkCover Certificate of Capacity?
Yes, for ongoing certificates. Your first must come from a doctor. After that, your physio at Your Story Physio can issue the rest, so you don’t need to go back to your GP.
If you already have your first certificate from a doctor, we can take over your ongoing certificates. If you haven’t seen a doctor yet, book a GP visit for your first certificate. You can book your physio assessment straight away.
Can you do a worksite visit before I go back to work?
Our physiotherapists routinely complete a worksite visit to ensure you are returning to a safe workplace. Even if you have already returned to work, a worksite visit is often recommended to ensure you can stay at work and have the best chance of preventing injury in the future
Do I have to be a member at Bodytek Fitness?
No. Everyone is welcome to come in for physiotherapy treatment. As a Your Story client, you have access to all the excellent facilities at Bodytek Fitness during your treatment sessions.
Do I need to know my claim status before I book?
No. Call us with what you know and we’ll work out the next step.
Can my employer make me do duties I can't manage?
Your certificate sets out what you can safely do. If your duties don’t match it, tell us and we’ll advise on the next step.
Do You Charge a Gap For WorkCover Physiotherapy?
Once your claim is approved, we don’t charge a gap. We take you through your entire rehab after an injury and there’s no out-of-pocket cost to you. All we ask is that you come to the appointments you book in.
How long does physio for work injuries last?
You can receive physiotherapy for as long as you need after an injury.
How long are your Treatment Sessions for WorkCover patients?
Your initial consultation is 40 minutes, whether you’re booking for WorkCover or a Certificate of Capacity. Follow-up physiotherapy sessions for work injuries may last anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes.
What makes you different from other physios who treat WorkCover patients?
We have 10+ Years experience working with WorkCover. We incorporate hands-on treatment with access to state of the art rehab equipment all in one place. When you come to us, we take you through the entire process so you get all your treatment in one place
What do I need to bring with me when I come in for WorkCover Physio?
Your claim number and confirmation that your claim has been approved, if you have them. If you don’t yet, bring any certificate you’ve received and details of your current duties, and we’ll explain what happens next.
How much is the first appointment?
Your initial consultation is $95 and runs for 40 minutes. If your claim is still pending, you pay on the day and keep the invoice for your case manager. Once approvals are in place, we send invoices directly to WorkCover.
When will I be reimbursed?
Keep your invoices and give them to your case manager. If your claim is accepted, eligible treatment costs can generally be reimbursed through your claim. Reimbursement isn’t automatic, and timing depends on the insurer. It can take a few weeks, sometimes a month or two.
What's the difference between wage payments and treatment costs?
Weekly payments replace part of your wages while you can’t work your normal hours. Treatment and consultation costs are medical and like expenses, which are handled separately.
